JoAnn Wold's Artist Statement
I have always loved the "look" of watercolor and admired the work of watercolor painters such as Andrew Wyeth, Singer Sargent, and Winslow Homer. I chose classes with great college instructors to improve my drawing skills. I attended two-dozen or more watercolor workshops, taught by world-renowned artists/teachers like Nita Engle. After much practice I was able to become a professional artist and conduct my own workshops and private classes.
My paintings reflect images I've seen and recorded when I lived in Alaska, and now in Minnesota, and from my travels elsewhere. I take many photos to get the few that I will actually use back in my studio. I can combine several photos in one painting or just use one. Painting outdoors is always fun if the weather and insects cooperate.
I paint what excites me, concentrating on light and shadow patterns, varied color combinations, or playful reflections. I don't bring issues into my pieces. I just paint what pleases me, with the hope that my paintings will bring pleasure to others too. |
